After an agricultural training Malcolm worked for a
firm of land agents in Oxfordshire before becoming
a commercial agent and then a property developer.
In 1984 the Prime Minister, Mrs Margaret Thatcher
asked him to join her Government following which he
served in John Major's Government. From starting as
a whip and Lord in Waiting to Her Majesty the Queen
he served as a Minister of State in the Departments of
Transport, Home Office, Environment, Foreign Office
and Treasury where he was also Paymaster General.
He is the only Hereditary Peer in the twentieth century
to have been a Minister in the Foreign Office, Home
Office and Treasury and was created a Privy Councillor
in 1990. He retired from Government in 1994 and jointly
founded an Estate agency in London as well as
devoted more time to the Castle.
In November 1999, Malcolm was one of 75 hereditary
peers elected to remain in the reformed House of
Lords. He is Chief Executive of the Trust.
